Discovering Heart Conditions and Efficient Treatment: Christine's Story at Corby UTC (2026)

Could a simple treatment centre hold the key to faster, more accurate healthcare? For one woman, the Corby Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) wasn't just a place to get better; it was where a life-altering heart condition was finally diagnosed when other doctors couldn't.

Christine Baaki, a 55-year-old who lives near Northampton, shared her incredible experience at the Corby UTC in Northamptonshire. She discovered she had Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), a serious heart condition, thanks to the sharp eyes of the staff there last year. "It's here that last year they found that I had it," she explained, noting that she's now under the care of a specialist heart hospital.

But here's where it gets remarkable: Christine actually prefers to drive an hour to reach the Corby UTC over visiting her closest A&E department. Why? She recalls waiting up to 14 hours at A&E in the past, a wait she described as "too long" and a risk for picking up infections, especially for someone like her who is considered vulnerable.

And this is the part most people miss... Urgent Treatment Centres like Corby's are specifically designed for urgent but not life-threatening conditions. Rob Bradley, an advanced clinical practitioner, clarified that they handle everything from sore throats and chest infections to more serious issues. They are equipped with facilities for blood tests, including D-dimer to rule out blood clots and troponin to help detect heart attacks, as well as X-ray services and plastering capabilities.

What makes the UTC so efficient? Patients are given an appointment time, and if there's a wait, they can even leave and return. Bradley, who previously worked in A&E for 13 years, called the UTC a "much more efficient" system. He added, "if you call 111, they can book you an appointment, give you a time to come in and you should be seen within 10 to 15 minutes of that appointment."

DHU Healthcare, the not-for-profit company that took over the centre in November, reported treating nearly 18,000 patients who might otherwise have overwhelmed A&E. In December alone, they saw 9,070 patients, an increase from November's 8,674. Asun Valle, clinical services lead, mentioned they can see between 250 to 400 patients daily, with winter presenting challenges due to respiratory illnesses and increased falls leading to injuries.

Valle also posed a thought-provoking question: "Imagine if each county had an urgent treatment centre, where they can do point-of-care testing, X-rays - it would certainly help to release the pressure from the A&Es." Do you agree that more UTCs are needed to alleviate pressure on A&E departments?

Jeremy Lane, 72, is another testament to the UTC's effectiveness. He traveled from Market Harborough after injuring his hand, finding the Corby UTC "a lot quicker, a lot more efficient" than his nearest A&E. He was seen within an hour and a half and referred directly to an orthopaedic department for his dislocated joint. Lane believes, "I think there ought to be more of them in towns, especially with the growth of houses and the population growing everywhere, so I think it's a good idea."
