The 2026 MLB season is almost upon us, but for many players, the wait for a new contract continues. As February approaches, the free-agent market is still a mystery for some notable players who have been on it for three months. Here's a breakdown of the best players still available at each position group:
INFIELDERS
Santana and France, both Gold Glove finalists at first base, had below-league-average hitting last season. France won the Gold Glove, while Santana won it in 2024. Goldschmidt, despite a strong start with the Yankees, lost his starting spot after a slump in the final 89 games.
STARTING PITCHERS
The starting pitcher position is deep, with several top-tier options. Chris Bassitt, Walker Buehler, Zac Gallen, Lucas Giolito, and more are available. Four of these starters are among MLB.com's top 30 free agents, led by Framber Valdez, who has multiple suitors despite a slow market due to draft pick compensation.
Gallen, who declined the qualifying offer, might return to Arizona or be linked to the Orioles, Cubs, Padres, or Angels. Littell and Bassitt, each with over 170 innings and a sub-4.00 ERA, are also viable options.
Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, future Hall of Famers, are considered mid-tier, but they still have value. Jordan Montgomery, after a poor 2024 season, underwent Tommy John surgery and is a question mark.
OUTFIELDERS
The outfield market lacks top center fielders, but corner outfielders are available. Andujar, Grichuk, and Marte are right-handed bats, while Tauchman is a left-handed hitter with above-average hitting skills.
Veterans Andrew McCutchen and Marcell Ozuna, primarily designated hitters, are also mentioned.
RELIEF PITCHERS
The relief pitcher market is nearly depleted, with many top arms signed before the end of 2025. David Robertson, a top reliever, retired, leaving a gap. Coulombe, despite a rough patch, had a strong record before his trade. Phillips, recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Kopech, with a high batting average against, are also available.
CATCHERS
The catcher market is thin, with J.T. Realmuto re-signing with the Phillies. Díaz and Vázquez provide defensive value, while Heim and Sánchez offer more offensive contributions. Heim, an All-Star, and Sánchez, with a high hard-hit rate, are notable.
